Berwick Modern House 2
Berwick, Victoria – Australia
Berwick Modern House is conceived as a series of refined architectural planes — concrete, timber, and glass — composed to celebrate both privacy and openness. The home sits gently elevated above the landscape, creating a floating horizontality while framing long, uninterrupted views to the surrounding garden.
A defining feature of the design is the controlled layering of screens and walls. Vertical timber battens provide privacy to intimate spaces while still allowing filtered light to animate the façade throughout the day. This rhythm of solid and void continues internally, where strategic skylight apertures draw daylight deep into the corridors and gatherings spaces.
At the heart of the house, an open-air courtyard brings nature inward — establishing a tranquil focal point that connects all wings visually and spatially. The glazed perimeter allows living, dining, and bedrooms to remain anchored to landscape and sky, reinforcing a constant dialogue with the outdoors.
Internally, warm timber ceilings and sophisticated stone surfaces add contrast to the minimal architectural lines. Clerestory glazing maintains both privacy from neighbouring properties and a continuous wash of daylight across the interior volumes.
Berwick Modern House reflects a balanced approach to contemporary living — refined yet relaxed, sculptural yet comfortable — a sanctuary that elevates the everyday through crafted materiality and thoughtful spatial composition.
